In the short time since its inception in 2021, the US Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Local Food Purchase Assistance (LFPA) program has demonstrated its capacity to create economic opportunities for producers, scale regional supply chains, and deliver healthy, culturally relevant food to those in need.
The Local Food Purchase Assistance program is one among many initiatives that USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) is leading to build resilient supply chains and promote market access for local and regional farmers, ranchers, and fishers. Specifically, through LFPA, AMS enters into non-competitive cooperative agreements with states, tribal, and territorial governments that in turn purchase locally grown and raised products to distribute in food assistance programs such as food pantries, schools and other organizations that serve food insecure communities. A pilot process for inclusive adaptation planning reveals that empowering citizens to identify climate impacts, and to discuss interventions to adapt to them, leads to better awareness of and preparedness for future climate change events.

When Dulce Ortiz wants to enjoy the beauty of Lake Michigan, walk in a green space, or see and touch the water, she has to leave her neighborhood, even though the second-largest of the Great Lakes is in her backyard.
Ortiz lives in Waukegan, Illinois, a suburb about an hour north of Chicago that has a lurid history of toxic waste. With a population of only 88,000, the city has five Superfund sites, many of them found along the Lake Michigan shoreline.
And that’s not even counting the large pools of toxic materials leftover from decades of burning coal in Waukegan. Deep pits of hazardous sludge sit along the shores of Lake Michigan, the watershed for roughly 12 million people.

As the House and Senate Agriculture Committees are busy working on their respective first drafts of the 2023 Farm Bill, farmers and advocates took an important opportunity to speak to Members of Congress about improved agriculture policy needs. Last week, NSAC hosted farmers, ranchers, and food system advocates from six states, who collectively attended nearly 20 meetings with Congressional offices and USDA officials, to share their stories and call for stronger, better-funded sustainable agriculture programs in the next farm bill.
“Fly-in” participants traveled to Washington DC from all over the country during the busy early summer season on their farms to ensure that their voices were heard in support of the programs that serve their operations. Participants flew in from Arkansas, Georgia, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, and Pennsylvania.
