Microsoft employees spent years fighting the tech giant’s oil ties. Now, they’re speaking out.
For nearly a decade, Holly Alpine (née Beale) loved working at Microsoft. Shortly after finishing college, in July 2014, she landed a job there as a technical account manager. Less than four years later, Alpine was leading a program that invests in environmental projects in the communities where Microsoft’s data centers are located. She was also helping organize a worker-led sustainability group called the Sustainability Connected Community, which would grow to nearly 10,000 Microsoft employees worldwide by late 2023.
But at the end of last year, Alpine reached a painful decision: She could no longer ethically work at Microsoft. On January 24, 2024, Alpine sent an email to Microsoft president Brad Smith, CEO Satya Nadella, and several other senior company officials, letting them know why.

Meeting the Paris Agreement targets requires deep emissions reductions supported by a scale-up in carbon dioxide removal. However, current country-reported mitigation pledges are off track to meet carbon dioxide removal needs, unless countries dramatically reduce emissions consistent with low-energy-demand scenarios.

Washington, DC, May 3, 2024 – Yesterday, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released the Final Rule on Pre-Harvest Agricultural Water, which finalizes a series of updates to Subpart E of the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Produce Safety Rule. This is one of the remaining components of the 2015 Produce Safety Rule and has been much anticipated by agricultural and public health communities. For nearly ten years, FDA has wrestled with crafting an appropriately risk- and science-based standard. April signaled the beginning of blistering heat for much of Texas. And while the summer heat is uncomfortable for many, it can be deadly for the people incarcerated in Texas’ prison system where temperatures regularly reach triple digits.
With another sweltering summer likely ahead, on April 22 prison rights advocates filed a complaint against Texas Department of Criminal Justice executive director Bryan Collier, arguing that the lack of air conditioning in the majority of Texas prisons amounts to cruel and unusual punishment.

USDA Announces Recipients of New Health Food Financing Expansion Grant
Last week, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development (RD) announced that it will partner with Reinvestment Fund, a national mission-driven financial institution, to fund 16 public-private partnerships. As an expansion of the Healthy Food Financing Initiative (HFFI), the Local and Regional Healthy Food Financing Partnerships Program (the HFFI Partnerships Program) will provide technical or financial assistance (including loans).
This is the inaugural round of the HFFI Partnerships Program, and they awarded over $ 40 million in grants to 75 partners in 20 states and Washington, DC. This new program is partly funded through the American Rescue Plan and will be used to expand or create new Healthy Food Financing Programs.
