Comment: In Package to Avert Government Shutdown, Congress Picks Winners and Losers in Farm Country
Washington, DC, December 21, 2024 – On Friday evening, Congress approved the American Relief Act, 2025 to extend government funding through March 14, 2025, extend certain provisions of the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018, and provide disaster relief for farmers hit hard by natural disasters during 2023 and 2024. Washington, DC, December 19, 2024 – On Thursday afternoon, reporting indicated that House Republicans had reached a partisan internal agreement on a deal to fund the government that includes disaster relief and a “clean” farm bill extension, but lacks other key priorities. As global temperatures rise from the burning of fossil fuels, researchers and policymakers have proposed solutions like installing renewable energy, replacing gasoline-powered cars with electric ones, and developing technology to suck carbon out of the air. But these policies often address climate change in isolation — without regard for other pressing issues like a decline in biodiversity, the contamination of freshwater sources, and the pollution of agricultural soils.
A new report released Tuesday by the United Nations’ expert panel on biodiversity makes the case for a different approach based on addressing the “nexus” between two or more out of five essential issue areas: climate change, biodiversity, food, human health, and water. Release: NSAC Urges Congress to Include Popular Conservation Funding in Farm Bill Extension
Washington, DC, December 13, 2024 – Today, the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition (NSAC), a coalition of more than 150 farm, food, conservation, and rural organizations, called on Congress to prioritize additional funding for the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) working lands conservation programs as lawmakers finalize an extension of the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018.
In a letter sent today to key Congressional leaders, NSAC highlighted the widespread popularity of USDA conservation programs among farmers and ranchers, noting that many cannot access critical funding due to overwhelming demand.
