Study: Every single country is failing the WHO’s new air quality standards

No country in the world met the new air quality standards established in September by the World Health Organization, or WHO, according to a new survey that analyzed 117 countries’ air last year.

Even within those countries, almost every city failed to meet the standards. The study, which looked at the real-time air quality of 6,475 cities, found that just 222 of them — less than 3.5 percent — had an average air quality reading that met the WHO’s standard. Nearly 100 cities experienced pollution levels that were ten times higher than the recommended level, according to IQAir, the Swiss pollution technology company that conducted the survey.

Environmental activist Sue Nissen wears a teaspoon on a string around her neck, which she likes to hand out to lawmakers during hearings in the Minnesota state legislature. That’s because one teaspoon of salt is enough to pollute five gallons of water, making it inhospitable for life.

Road crews dump more than 20 million metric tons of salt on U.S. roads each winter to keep them free of ice and snow – an almost unfathomable number of teaspoons. Now, Nissen’s organization, Stop Over Salting, is pushing for Minnesota to pass a bill to reduce that figure by helping applicators learn how to use less of it — a technique called “smart salting.”

Melanism is a genetic mutation that occurs in many different types of animals, including mammals, reptiles and insects. Among the best-known melanistic animals are the black leopards and jaguars known as panthers.

Ocean pollution and depletion of natural resources have been tied to plastic use, with many major brands making commitments to utilize more recycled content. One avenue is utilizing post-consumer resin (PCR) in the production of new products. PCR is derived from consumer packaging that is processed into recycled plastics.

The Canadian government has set an aspirational target of incorporating 50% recycled content in plastic products, where applicable, by 2030. The Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) sought to understand the feasibility and the cost of incorporating PCR in certain plastic packaging applications.
