WASHINGTON, D.C. (June 8, 2022) – The Recycling Partnership is pleased to announce the launch of its PET Recycling Coalition, an initiative informed by industry knowledge and expertise to improve PET (plastic #1) circularity. Its work will focus on addressing four key opportunities to increase recycling of this valuable material:

Increasing the capture of PET bottles
Broadening the acceptance of PET trays, cups, and clamshells in community recycling collection programs
Unlocking new supplies of recycled PET (rPET) for packaging manufacturers
Strengthening recycling systems for pigmented and opaque PET

ACT Spearheaded to Address Circularity in Fashion

New York, NY, June 8, 2022 – A new group focused on advancing circular textile policy in the U.S. was announced today. The American Circular Textiles (ACT) policy group, was spearheaded by CSG (Circular Services Group), RRS (Resource Recycling Systems), and 11 founding organizations. ACT aims to align fashion’s circularity community on the development of supportive policy to address the challenges to scaling domestic textile recovery and end-of-life solutions, our nation’s fastest-growing waste stream. Their initial focus is on textile reuse.

RRS’ SANDFORD AND SEGUNDO TAKE ON NEW ROLES

Thirty-five years ago, Kerry Sandford and Jim Frey founded RRS. Through the years Mr. Sandford has utilized his knowledge and experience of recycling systems including material recovery facility (MRF) design, cost modeling, equipment testing, and innovative technologies integration to advance the recovery of materials.

Mr. Sandford is starting a new chapter in his already accomplished career and taking an appointment with the REMADE Institute as the lead for the Recycling and Recovery Node. Mr. Sandford will continue to contribute to projects and supporting clients at RRS, as well as mentoring fellow RRS engineers.

NEW REPORT EXAMINES US UNIVERSITY SUSTAINABILITY AND RECOVERY ACTIVITIES

April 12, 2021, Ann Arbor, Mich. – RRS announced the release of the Examination of US University Sustainability and Recovery Activities report, providing an overview of recycling, organics recovery, and sustainability activities on US university and college campuses.

RRS conducted the independent study via online research of 312 universities and colleges in the US, approximately 11%, categorizing the findings by region and student enrollment size.

Key findings include:

63% of schools sampled have an established recycling program on campus.
33% of schools sampled have some type of composting available on campus, however they varied in type of accepted materials.
Of the schools sampled, the average recycling rate was 24%; the diversion rate, which included recycling and composting, was approximately 45%.

Johnson Appointed to Virginia Advisory Council

Anne Johnson, RRS principal and vice president of global corporate sustainability, has been appointed by Virginia Governor Ralph Northam to the Plastic Waste Prevention Advisory Council. The council’s purpose is to advise the governor on policy and funding priorities to eliminate plastic waste impacting the Commonwealth and to contribute to achieving plastics packaging circular economy industry standards.

Assessing the Costs of Using PCR in the Manufacture of Plastic Packaging & Products

Ocean pollution and depletion of natural resources have been tied to plastic use, with many major brands making commitments to utilize more recycled content. One avenue is utilizing post-consumer resin (PCR) in the production of new products. PCR is derived from consumer packaging that is processed into recycled plastics.

The Canadian government has set an aspirational target of incorporating 50% recycled content in plastic products, where applicable, by 2030. The Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) sought to understand the feasibility and the cost of incorporating PCR in certain plastic packaging applications. The ECCC is a department of the Canadian government responsible for coordinating environmental policies and programs, as well as informing the public about ensuring a clean, safe, and sustainable environment.
