Washington, DC, February 13, 2025 – Today, the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition (NSAC) released the following statement attributable to Mike Lavender, NSAC Policy Director, in response to the Senate confirmation of Brooke Rollins as Secretary of Agriculture with a 72-28 vote:

“Secretary Rollins’ first order of business must be to relieve and reverse the pain and confusion being felt by farmers and communities nationwide from the federal funding freeze. This includes honoring legal obligations to farmers and organizations by immediately releasing funding on all signed contracts. Release: Senate Hearing Highlights Need for Broader View of Beginning Farmer Challenges

Washington, DC, June 5, 2024 – Yesterday, the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry’s Subcommittee on Commodities, Risk Management, and Trade held a hearing entitled, “Pathways to Farming: Helping the Next Generation of Farmers.” The almost two-hour hearing featured four witnesses who spoke to their experiences as beginning farmers and ranchers. In response to the hearing, the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition (NSAC) and National Young Farmers Coalition (Young Farmers) issued the following statements.

FY 2024 “Minibus” Maintains Support for Vital Sustainable Agriculture Programs

Washington, DC, November 1, 2023 – Today, the Senate passed its Fiscal Year (FY) 2024 “minibus” appropriations package, which includes discretionary funding for agriculture and food access programs such as Conservation Technical Assistance and the Sustainable Agriculture Research & Education Program, among others. “Minibus” refers to a small package of different appropriations bills, which in this case consists of Military Construction and Veterans Affairs; Transportation, Housing and Urban Development; and Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration.

Release: NSAC Congratulates Senate on Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 Passage, Urges Swift House Action

Funding Prioritizes Climate Solutions for Agriculture and Includes Key Coalition Priorities

Washington, DC, August 7, 2022 – Today the full Senate passed the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, which would provide approximately $ 40 billion for climate change mitigation and resilience efforts over the next ten years through key agriculture provisions. The National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition encourages the House to convene and pass the bill immediately with agricultural spending intact to ensure farmers and ranchers are able to act with urgency to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and build climate resilience. U.S. Senate passes historic climate bill

The Senate passed the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 on Sunday, a $ 433 billion climate, energy, health, and tax bill that will set the United States on course to reduce its cumulative emissions roughly 40 percent, compared to 2005 levels, by 2030. Fifty Democratic senators voted for the bill, including centrists Joe Manchin, from West Virginia, and Kyrsten Sinema, from Arizona. Republican senators unilaterally opposed the legislation. Vice President Kamala Harris cast the tie-breaking vote.

In a statement, President Joe Biden said that the bill “makes the largest investment ever in combating the existential crisis of climate change.”

The Inflation Reduction Act, or IRA, came out of left field. Democratic leadership had been gunning to pass a climate bill since President Joe Biden’s very first months in office last year. But they immediately ran into roadblocks that seemed insurmountable. …
