2024 Year in Review: Key Wins, Challenges, and What’s Next for Sustainable Agriculture

There’s no such thing as a ‘quiet’ year when it comes to federal food and farm policy, and 2024 proved to be no exception! As the year comes to a close, we are reflecting on the progress we have made toward building a more resilient and equitable farm and food system. Amidst endless delays in Congress, a noisy election cycle, and major natural disasters that affected farmers nationwide, NSAC continued to do what we do best: advocate for better federal food and farm policy through legislation like the farm bill, annual appropriations, and ongoing engagement with USDA, all aimed at building a future where farmers, workers, and communities sustain a thriving food and farm system that nourishes people, stewards our environment and builds strong economies.

Release: Cynthia Hayes Scholarship Awarded to Rising Stars in Sustainable Agriculture

Scholars exemplify Hayes’ commitment to racial equity 

Washington, DC, August 12, 2022 – Today, the Southeastern African American Farmers’ Organic Network (SAAFON), the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition (NSAC), and Minorities in Agriculture Natural Resources and Related Sciences (MANRRS) announced that three students have been awarded the Cynthia Hayes Memorial Scholarship.  The three student awardees: Rhema Meggett, Justin Walker, and Sydney Lawson were each presented with $ 5,000 to support their continued work in sustainable agriculture and bolster their commitments to promoting racial equity in food and farm systems.

What’s in the President’s Budget Request for Sustainable Agriculture?

The Biden-Harris Administration released the President’s Budget Request (PBR) for the Fiscal Year (FY) 2023 on March 28, 2022. The $ 5.8 trillion budget request comes several months late, as the budget request is typically expected to be presented to Congress on the first Monday of February.  Yet this budget represents an improvement relative to the PBR FY 2022 timeline, which was issued on May 28th, 2021, due to the previous Administration’s refusal to concede the 2022 election. The detailed proposal for FY 2023 (October 1, 2022 – September 30, 2023) includes the President’s discretionary spending plans and builds on the PBR FY 2022 but does stray from the spending priorities put forward in that document in ways that are discussed in detail below.

Inside the FY22 Appropriations Package: Wins for Sustainable Agriculture

Increased funding for research is a notable win for sustainable agriculture in the FY22 appropriations bill

On March 15th President Biden signed H.R. 2471, the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2022, also known as the fiscal year (FY) 2022 Omnibus, after significant delays in the appropriations process. These delays resulted in three previous stopgap funding bills to keep the government running in the meantime, known as Continuing Resolutions (CR). The omnibus provides funding through FY 2022, which started on October 1, 2021, and ends in September 2022. In the interim, the federal government was operating on a series of CRs that kept government funding at FY 2021 levels.

In this blog post, the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition (NSAC) examines the content of the FY 2022 agriculture appropriations bill and how NSAC’s appropriations priorities fared in the process.
