The United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) is gearing up to send its survey for the 2022 Census of Agriculture. Whether or not you have participated in the past, filling out the survey is an important way for every farmer in America to influence the policies and programs that impact US agriculture every day.

The Census of Agriculture is conducted every five years to collect critical data on the status of agriculture across the United States. These data address a variety of topics, including the number and size of farms across the county, the prevalence of organic agriculture, the use of conservation and other federal programs, the number of beginning and socially disadvantaged farmers, and the average age of American farmers, all of which help to inform federal food and agriculture programs and policies. As a result, by participating in the Census, farmers can directly influence which policies and programs USDA prioritizes in the upcoming years. Legislators use these data to get a glimpse into what topics in US agriculture need the most attention. Beyond the government, trade associations and other organizations use the data to inform programs that help producers and their communities across the United States. With all of these valuable uses for the data collected, the importance of participating in the Census of Agriculture cannot be overstated!

The 2022 Census of Agriculture will be released in phases starting in November 2022. USDA will mail out survey access codes to producers across the country in late November. These survey codes can be used to access the Census of Agriculture survey online. Paper response forms will also be mailed in December 2022 for those who prefer to complete the Census of Agriculture forms with a physical hard copy. It’s all about preference. The online form has time-saving benefits, but hard copies are made available for those who find that format more accessible. Farmers from all 50 states and Puerto Rico can participate. However, it is important to note that farmers in Puerto Rico will only receive communications and survey materials for the Census in December.

This year’s survey is unique in that it includes updated questions on hemp production, precision agriculture, internet access, and other topics. The deadline to return the completed Census survey will be in 2023.
